IGA Windmill Hill, Tamworth NSW

A step change to CO2 by Hussmann and Ultra Refrigeration

Driving sustainable retail with Panasonic CO2 technology

Client: IGA Windmill Hill
Location: Tamworth NSW, Australia
Project Partner: Ultra Refrigeration

The new IGA Windmill Hill, Tamworth NSW development showcases a commitment to sustainable refrigeration through the implementation of a natural refrigerant solution centred on Panasonic Transcritical CO₂ Outdoor Condensing Units and an extensive range of Hussmann refrigerated display cases. The project was delivered by Ultra Refrigeration, whose expertise in system design, installation, commissioning and project coordination ensured the successful integration of multiple refrigeration systems across the supermarket.

The refrigeration package combines Panasonic CO₂ outdoor condensing units serving frozen food, dairy, meat, produce and refrigerated storage applications, together with Hussmann glass door freezers, dairy cabinets, meat displays, produce cases and island cabinets throughout the store. The system also supports multiple cool rooms, freezer rooms and food preparation areas, providing a fully integrated low-GWP refrigeration solution.

Ultra Refrigeration’s workmanship and technical capability were instrumental in delivering a high-quality installation that met the project’s sustainability, energy efficiency and operational objectives. The result is a modern supermarket environment offering excellent product presentation, reduced environmental impact and enhanced refrigeration performance through the adoption of proven natural refrigerant technology and premium refrigerated display equipment.

Evidence of Performance

The IGA Windmill Hill (Tamworth) project demonstrates measurable performance through the successful deployment of a natural refrigerant refrigeration system using Panasonic Transcritical CO₂ Outdoor Condensing Units and a complete suite of Hussmann refrigerated display cases, installed and commissioned by Ultra Refrigeration. The system serves all major refrigerated applications throughout the store, including frozen food, dairy, meat, produce, cool rooms, freezer rooms, preparation rooms and liquor storage.

Operational Scope Delivered

  • Multisystem Panasonic CO₂ outdoor condensing unit installation servicing approximately 88.8 kW of CO₂ refrigeration load across medium and low temperature applications.
  • Refrigeration plan including P series and V Series range, supporting:
    • Glass door freezer cabinets
    • Dairy display cases
    • Meat display cases
    • Produce display cases
    • Island refrigerated cabinets
    • Dairy, meat, produce and bakery cool rooms
    • Freezer rooms and liquor storage areas
  • More than 95 kW of total connected refrigerated load across CO₂ and ancillary systems.

Sustainability Performance

  • Adoption of R744 (CO₂) as the primary refrigerant across all major display cabinets, cool rooms and freezer applications. CO₂ has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1 and eliminates reliance on high-GWP synthetic refrigerants for the main refrigeration systems.
  • The project aligns with Australia’s transition towards lower-emission refrigeration technologies and demonstrates the viability of natural refrigerants for independent supermarket applications.

Installation and Delivery Performance

  • Ultra Refrigeration successfully coordinated the installation, commissioning and integration of multiple Panasonic CO₂ condensing units and associated refrigeration systems within a new supermarket development.
  • The completed installation incorporates extensive refrigerated retail merchandising areas together with back-of-house storage and food preparation facilities, all operating from a unified natural refrigerant platform.
  • Photographic evidence confirms the successful commissioning of the Panasonic CO₂ condensing units, completion of refrigerated sales areas and installation of Hussmann refrigerated display cabinets throughout the store.

Technology and Product Performance

  • Panasonic CO₂ Outdoor Condensing Units provide inverter-driven capacity control and factory-engineered transcritical CO₂ technology suitable for Australian climatic conditions.
  • Hussmann refrigerated cases deliver fully integrated temperature-controlled merchandising across dairy, meat, produce and frozen food categories, supporting food safety and product presentation requirements.
  • Electronic expansion valve control and Carel/BOSS control systems were implemented throughout the installation to provide accurate temperature management and system optimisation.

Project Outcome

The completed project delivered a fully operational supermarket refrigeration system based predominantly on natural refrigerant technology. Through the combined efforts of Ultra Refrigeration, Panasonic and Hussmann, the store achieved a modern, energy-efficient refrigeration solution that supports reliable operation, improved environmental performance and high-quality food merchandising. The project demonstrates how independent supermarkets can successfully adopt low-GWP refrigeration technology while maintaining operational performance across all refrigerated applications.
